There is no use fighting it… we are all getting older every second that passes.  However, no matter how old you are you don’t have to move like you are getting old!

As Joseph Pilates once said “You are only as old as your spine. If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young!”

Pilates is fantastic at promoting increased spine flexibility, so it can be considered an anti-ageing tool of sorts.

From the age of 30 the ageing process really starts to begin with bone density and muscle density starting to naturally decrease. Due to its low impact on joints and its positive impact on bone and muscle density, Pilates is a wonderful movement therapy to keep you looking and feeling young. Joseph Pilates practised it right up until his death (when he was 83).

The Body Refinery’s oldest client, Lottie, is 94!  She only discovered Pilates in her 80s, but says she wishes she’d discovered it earlier – to add to her bag of anti-ageing tricks (which include daily walks and watching her weight).

In addition to building bone and muscle density, Pilates is also great for anti-ageing because it can be specifically tailored to your level of fitness and ability.  So, whether you’re 9 or 90, fit or not, Pilates can help get your spine moving the way it should be (or make sure it stays flexible if it already is)!

Pilates is a system of exercises which is designed to build your body’s core strength gradually through balancing, stretching and correct breathing techniques.  If you make a regular commitment to Pilates you will see the difference in your body. Joseph Pilates once said In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 sessions you’ll see the difference, and in 30 sessions you’ll have a whole new body”.  Whether that is accurate probably varies from one person to another, however, Susan (the studio owner) currently sees a client in her mid sixties who, in 25 sessions, has completely changed her body composition, increased her strength, and has said she now feels like she has a spring in her step.

As you age, no matter what your health and wellbeing goals are, Pilates can help you achieve them and should boost your energy and passion for movement, which will help keep you feeling young!
