There are Pilates studios, and there are Pilates studios… if you get what we mean.
Plenty of people can claim to be experts in the Pilates method, but how do you – a beginner – really know if that’s true or not? If you have no experience on the Pilates mat, there’s a good chance that you won’t know if your Pilates instructor is a professional or not. You simply don’t know what you’re looking for.
Well, here’s a few things you should look out for to make sure you have the best possible Pilates instructor…

Qualifications
The best way to learn Pilates properly and safely is with a diploma level qualified instructor. Look for PAA or APMA courses, which are considered the best in the industry. Qualifications prove that your instructor has learned Pilates professionally, not just as a side hobby. This is crucial because you’ll need your instructor to be able to make modifications, adjustments and recommendations based on your own body – not theirs.

Information
Good instructors will have enough knowledge that they can give you advanced information on technique, positions and body connections. Instead of just ‘squeeze your butt’, they’ll be able to tell you how, why and where to engage your glutes to ensure you’re getting the most out of your class – and learning more about your body every time.
Feedback
Your instructor should be able to offer you feedback, even in group classes. When you feel a position isn’t working for you, they can give you advice and adjustments to fix that. This isn’t to say you should expect their full attention in a class of eight, but your instructor should be experienced enough to notice a client who is struggling or needs extra help. They will also see you improve if you go often enough!
