We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Pilates can change your life! In fact, it completely changed The Body Refinery’s owner, Susan’s life.
After suffering from chronic neck pain, Sooz started doing Pilates, getting hooked when her pain disappeared shortly afterwards. She was so committed to the practice – combined with her background in physiotherapy – that she bought the studio in 2007, which soon became The Body Refinery!
Is Pilates right for you? Well, are you any of the following?

Women can do pilates
When you’re balancing work, family and everything in between, you need something just for you. Pilates uses your mind as much as your body, which is why it tends to be so popular among women. The use of your deep core muscles – your abdominals, obliques, pelvic floor, erector spinae and multifidus – means you’ll leave each class feeling connected and strong.
Men can do Pilates
While women still tend to dominate class numbers, Pilates holds plenty of benefits and challenges for men (yes, it’s hard!). Whether you’re lifting weights, training for a marathon or just want to have better sex (yep), Pilates can help you fine-tune your performance, increase your flexibility and develop neglected muscles.

Fitness Junkies can do Pilates
Pilates makes a great cross-training exercise. It will help with anything that needs good alignment and a greater range of motion (so… everything!).
Just remember to schedule your classes on alternate days to your other workouts to give your muscles a chance to recover and repair.
Children can do Pilates
During school holidays, we hold classes just for children.
It is essential for all children to be exposed to physical activity. Generally, boys have a higher probability of increased physical activity from 9 -12 years onwards, whereas girls tend to decrease or stop their involvement in physical activity around 9-12 years old. These changes in exercise patterns are defined as the ‘magic window’ and is the optimal age range to introduce exercise modalities, such as Pilates.
Beginners can do Pilates
At The Body Refinery, we believe strong, healthy bodies should be within everyone’s reach. That’s why our classes are designed to suit all levels. We always recommend beginners start with a reformer class. Structured and as challenging as you want them to be, reformer classes are fun – despite the burn! We limit our classes to eight people to ensure you still get plenty of one-on-one attention.
